"Growing Old in Christ" presents the first serious theological reflection ever on what it means to grow old, particularly in our culture and particularly as a Christian. In a full-orbed discussion of the subject, eighteen first-rate Christian thinkers survey biblical and historical perspectives on aging, look at aging in the modern world, and describe the "Christian practice of growing old." Along the way they address many timely issues, including the medicalization of aging, the debate over physician-assisted suicide, and the importance of friendships both among the elderly and between the elderly and the young.

Weighty enough to instruct theologians, ethicists, and professional caregivers yet accessible enough for pastors and general readers, this book will benefit anyone seeking faith-based insight into growing old.

The atlas is visually attractive, with many color photographs. Each double-page spread of maps has a border of small photographs with a description of sites or attractions and a grid locator. Descriptive information on countries is very limited. No mention is made of current wars or conflicts.

The index contains about 100,000 entries with pictograms and page and grid locators. It is unfortunate that the example used in the good explanation of how to use the index lists an incorrect page number. The use in the index of international license-plate codes for identifying countries is confusing. Who would guess that ROU is Uruguay or SP is Somalia?

The Hammond World Travel Atlas is a medium-sized atlas with competition from DK's World Atlas (2005), Oxford's Atlas of the World (2004), and the Reader's Digest Illustrated World Atlas (2004). It could be considered by any library that wants a current atlas with a new twist. Christine Bulson

Adam of Bremen's history of the see of Hamburg and of Christian missions in northern Europe from the late eighth to the late eleventh century is the primary source of our knowledge of the history, geography, and ethnography of the Scandinavian and Baltic regions and their peoples before the thirteenth century. Arriving in Bremen in 1066 and soon falling under the tutelage of Archbishop Adalbert, who figures prominently in the narrative, Adam recorded the centuries-long campaign by his church to convert Slavic and Scandinavian peoples. His history vividly reflects the firsthand accounts he received from travelers, traders, and missionaries on the peripheries of medieval Europe.
