From Publishers Weekly
Lauren Hill is about to be married off to the highest bidder once again by her greedy guardian, who is livid that she gave up her late husband's fortune. She tries to stop his matchmaking schemes by going into trade with the local villagers, but her estate is in dire straits and she needs a cash infusion. Lauren's guardian blackmails her into agreeing to spend a season in London and eventually get married. The ton is enchanted with the beautiful Countess Bergen (her official, if empty, title). Lauren, however, is disappointed with the men, especially when she compares them to a certain kind and generous country gentleman she met briefly that summer named Lord Alex Christian. No one is more surprised than she when Christian turns out to be none other than the aloof, influentialAand engagedADuke of Sutherland. Despite his duties and responsibilities, Alex breaks his engagement for his new love. Yet Lauren cannot bear to bring scandal to the man she loves and becomes engaged to another. London (The Devil's Love) fails to enliven an overused plot in this lukewarm Regency.

Book Description
Forbidden love is always a scandalous choice.

She raced across the pasture, vaulted a fence, and landed, stunned and breathless, on top of the most handsome man she had ever seen. The bemused stranger stayed to capture the fancy of the brood of orphaned children in her charge, then stole Lauren Hill's heart with a searing kiss as he left. Lauren couldn't tell him she was a widowed countess fallen on hard times. She tried to forget him--until she saw him again at a London ball. The man who haunted her dreams was a duke, out of her classand he was pledged to another woman.

The ton is ablaze with talk of the ravishing Bavarian countess. Stunned, Alexander Christian, Duke of Sutherland, recognizes Lauren as the country girl who's captured his heart. Duty has forced him to pledge himself to another, to take his proper place in society and in Parliament. He wants one night with his blue-eyed enchantress, but will he be able to walk away from her again, or will he risk it all to be with the woman who fires his blood and makes him think of a . . . Wicked Angel.

From Booklist
These poignant memories by 27 German survivors of World War II relate how as children--ages 3 to 12--they endured air raids, hunger, terror, invading armies, and deprivation. Samuel tells of their resilience under the most trying circumstances and the critical role their mothers played in their lives. Samuel, a survivor himself and author of German Boy: A Refugee's Story (2000), relates that during the course of his interviews he encountered no one wanting revenge, and no one expressing a hate or dislike of people of other nations or ethnic groups because of events that happened long ago. He found that many of them are still troubled by the sounds, sights, or smells that remind them of war, bringing back the dark moments of childhood, and that few have shared completely their memories with their children. The Art of Travel The Art of Travel
by Alain de Botton

From Library Journal
An experienced traveler and the author of five books, including How Proust Can Change Your Life, De Botton here offers nine essays concerning the art of travel. Divided into five sections "Departure," "Motives," "Landscape," "Art," and "Return" the essays start with one of the author's travel experiences, meander through artists or writers related to it, and then intertwine the two. De Botton's style is very thoughtful and dense; he considers events of the moment and relates them to his internal dialog, showing how experiences from the past affect the present. In "On Curiosity," for example, which describes a weekend in Madrid, De Botton compares his reliance on a very detailed guidebook to the numerous systematic measurements Alexander von Humboldt made during his 1799 travels in South America. De Botton compares Humboldt's insatiable desire for detail with his own ennui and wish that he were home. There are also details about a fight over dessert, the van Gogh trail in Provence, and Wordsworth's vision of nature. Although well written and interesting, this volume will have limited popular appeal. Recommended for larger public libraries. Alison Hopkins, Brantford P.L., ON

From Booklist
Rather than lavishing pages on the sumptuous taste of a sun-ripened olive in Provence, philosopher de Botton examines what inspires us to escape the humdrum and purchase tickets to Tahiti, tromp through the countryside, or wander Rome. Left to one voice, such an inquiry might grow dull, but de Botton uses the lives and works of artists and writers to explore the premise. With each chapter, the author dissects our motivation to depart normality and go (he quotes Baudelaire) "anywhere, anywhere!" De Botton's anecdotal accounts of his own travels illustrate the theme of each chapter, such as exoticism or escapism, showing the unexpected (but all too common) disappointments inherent in getting away. Then, using the interior and artistic lives of others, de Botton probes the psychological underpinnings of why we go. The book shines when discussing Flaubert's lifelong urge for Egypt and painter Edward Hopper's affinity for the desolation of fuel stops and Automats. This literary travelogue feeds hungry readers seeking self-insight. Nicole Waller

From Booklist
For this companion, which is international in scope, editor Lenman (retired, University of Warwick) assembled more than 1,600 entries, of which approximately 800 cover photographers, past and present, and others affiliated with photography. Remaining entries deal with countries, photographic terms and technology, genres, photographic themes (for example, Sociology and photography), and other topics. Several one- to two-page special essays (for example, "Inner-German Border Photography, 1952-1989") are interspersed throughout the volume, as are about 300 photographs, 48 of which are color plates. Article length varies from a short paragraph to several pages (as in the four-and-a-half-page Germany). Content leans toward the historical and theoretical rather than the practical. For example, Lighting and lighting equipment describes key light, fill, and effects lights, then traces the historical development of lighting in photography. Biographical entries emphasize contributions to photography. Entries on countries and photographic themes cover a wide range. Even more diverse, entries on photographic genres cover the popular (e.g., Photojournalism, Sports photography) and the less popular (e.g., Exploration photography, Zoo photography).

Within articles, an asterisk by a word indicates a separate entry. Some articles offer see also references; many also contain short bibliographies, in some cases listing non-English publications. Articles conclude with the initials of one of 180 contributors. Additional features include a thematic table of contents, a chronology, a topically arranged bibliography, a list of key Web sites arranged by type of site and country, and an "Index of People and Companies."

With articles covering such current topics as the Camera phone, Internet, and Photoblogging, this title updates older resources. Similar in scope to The Photography Encyclopedia (Schirmer, 1999), it is appropriate for both scholars and general readers. An affordable, useful tool for academic and public libraries. Stephen Fadel

From Library Journal
Published posthumously in 1939, this novel introduces George Webber, whose saga is followed up in Wolfe's signature work, You Can't Go Home Again. The story begins with Webber's North Carolina upbringing and moves on to his relocation to New York City, where he meets wealthy socialite Esther Jack, who introduces him to a whole new world. Essential for public and academic libraries.

The Merriam-Webster encyclopedia of Literature
Novel by Thomas Wolfe, published posthumously in 1939 after being reworked by editor Edward Aswell from a larger manuscript. Like Wolfe's other novels, The Web and the Rock is an autobiographical account of a successful young writer from North Carolina living in New York City in the early 20th century. The main character, George Webber, bears many similarities to Eugene Gant, the soul-searching protagonist of Wolfe's earlier novels Look Homeward, Angel (1929) and Of Time and The River (1935). Esther Jack, who first appeared in Of Time and the River, is an urban sophisticate who becomes Webber's lover and muse. The Web and the Rock has been criticized for its inconsistent style but praised for its poetry and passion. Its sequel is You Can't Go Home Again (1940). --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
