Product Review
The essence of London, found "in the swing, tramp, and trudge; in the bellow and uproar; the carriages, motor cars, omnibuses, vans, sandwich men shuffling and swinging; brass bands; barrel organs; in the triumph and the jingle and the strange high singing of some aeroplane overhead" (Mrs. Dalloway), is ably conveyed in the visual burst of Dorling Kindersley's London guide. This compact book is filled to overflowing with a montage of timelines, street maps, 3-D aerial views, district maps, cutaways of important buildings--including Buckingham Palace and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre--and more than 1,200 full-color photographs.

Like all of DK's books, this reference is overwhelming when you first crack open the pages. There's so much information, you almost don't know where to start. Lucky for tourists, London's editors kept a steady eye on usability when they organized the book. It begins with a short history (mostly conveyed in images) and then moves to an extensive section on the sights and sounds of the city by the Thames. The aim is to give you a "portrait" of each area before divulging the details, of which there is no lack. If you're worried about the practicalities of the trip, fear not: London is on your side. A section on travelers' needs and a handy survival guide--including instructions, complete with photographic aides, on how to use different types of public telephones--should eliminate any apprehension about exploring this wondrous city. Perhaps the most useful feature for those on the go who want portable information, and for those who hate to haul out maps in public ("Hey! I'm a tourist!"), is the "Street Finder," a comprehensive index of street names and 24 pages of corresponding maps. Small enough to fit in your backpack, London is the guide to grab before hopping on the Underground. --Heidi Robinson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Review
As the name implies, the Eyewitness travel guides bring you the world in full living color. In the Australia edition, each information-packed page is splashed with enticing photographs of the people, animals, plants, rock formations, deserts, and ocean vistas that make the country Down Under famous the world over. On the practical side, there are thousands of details to help you find your way to the must-see spots, plus full-color maps and useful at-a-glance tables that make it easy to sort through and locate food and accommodation choices.

The introduction offers an overview of Australia's world-heritage sites, aboriginal culture and art, artists and writers, wines, surfing and beach culture, climate, annual events, flora and fauna, landscape, as well as a detailed history section. --Kathryn True --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Publisher Description
One Team: A Devotion to Quality There’s just one reason our team is dedicated to producing quality travel publications—you, our reader. We want you to get the maximum benefit from your trip—and from your money. In today’s multiple-choice world of travel, the options are many, perhaps overwhelming. In our guidebooks, we try to minimize the guesswork involved with travel. We scout out the attractions, prioritize them with star ratings, and describe what you’ll discover when you visit them. To help you orient yourself, we provide colorful and detailed, but easy-to-follow maps. Floor plans of some of the major museums help you plan your tour. Throughout the guides, we offer practical information, touring tips and suggestions for finding the best views of the city, a good place for a break or where to make that special purchase. Lodging and dining are always a big part of travel, so we compile a selection of hotels and restaurants that we think convey the feel of the city, and organize them by geographic area and price. We also highlight shopping, recreational and entertainment venues, especially the hot spots. If you’re short on time, two- and four-day itineraries are included so you can hit the highlights and quickly absorb the best of the destination. For those of you who love to experience a destination on foot, we add walking tours, complete with a map. And we list other companies who offer boat, bus or guided walking tours of the city, some with culinary, historical or other themes. In short, we test and retest, check and recheck to make sure that our guidebooks are truly just that: a personalized guide to help you make the most of your visit. After all, we want you to enjoy traveling as much as we do.
