Product Review
First launched in 1983, Annapolis remains the sailor's bible, a comprehensive chapter and verse guide to all aspects of seamanship from the simplest ABC's to the most advanced skills and latest electronics. And while much of the original edition has been left in dry dock to make way for the many changes on the water since 1983--like multihull vessels, satellite tracking, and the reality that while all ships remain "she," there is no longer the assumption that it's a "he" at the helm--Rousmaniere still emphasizes what he's stressed from the first tack: the importance of mastering sailing's fundamentals. This means knowing every inch of your boat and how to handle her, understanding the importance of safety on the seas and preparing for all emergencies, reading the weather, learning to navigate, knowing essential boat maintenance, and being aware of the traditions every sailor steps into whenever he or she sticks feet in a pair of topsiders. Clearly organized and presented, cleanly and smoothly written (given how much technical information he presents, Rousmaniere's prose is blessedly jargon-free), and thoroughly illustrated with photos and drawings, Annapolis is as essential as a good wind, perhaps the one volume no sailor should leave port without. --Jeff Silverman
Product Review
Yachting magazine A volume that any sailor or would-be sailor simply must own. American Sailing Association The beauty of the book is that it is both a superb reference manual, which any sailor -- regardless of experience -- will want to own, and a readable, practical introduction to sailing for the beginner, A joy to behold. The most complete and best reference book on the sport that has ever been available. Chuck Hawley West Marine Products The Annapolis Book of Seamanship is thorough, well written, and nicely illustrated. Not just a repeat of tired old sailing methods of thirty years ago, it integrates the classic techniques (storm tactics. navigation) with the modern (Crew Overboard Recovery, modern anchors, and electronics). I highly recommend this book and encourage anyone to buy it if they want to improve their sailing skills. Sail magazine The Annapolis Book of Seamanship is about practically everything that has to do with sailing and sailboats. Yachting magazine [Rousmaniere's] chapters on sail trim and weather, in particular, are the best that I can recall reading.

Product Review
When America aspired to break free from Britain, the real-life David-and-Goliath situation required that a full-blown cadre of dynamic leaders arise immediately from the revolutionary populace. As history shows, it did. Now, Donald T. Phillips--writer, speaker, and mayor of Fairview, Texas--uses those events to suggest ways that today's businesspeople can likewise overcome tough odds and achieve success. Goal-setting, communication, and risk-taking, Phillips writes in The Founding Fathers on Leadership: Classic Teamwork in Changing Times, are just a few of the traits to be learned by studying Washington, Jefferson, and their colleagues.

From Library Journal
Plumbing the depths of history for insight and inspiration is a common practice in management and leadership books, with varying success, as these two titles illustrate. Dunnigan, the author of over a dozen war-related books (e.g., Digital Soldiers, LJ 10/1/96), and software executive Masterson Review the business practices and techniques of 12 famous military leaders?Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Charlemagne, Genghis Khan, Edward III, Gustavus Adolphus, Frederick the Great, Napoleon, Ulysses Grant, Douglas MacArthur, George Patton, and Norman Schwarzkopf. Chapters, arranged by leader, include a brief, all-too-casual biography of each, followed by the challenges they faced and the solutions they enacted. Opening and closing chapters try to put the techniques described into a modern perspective, but many of the solutions offered, such as the ruthlessness of Genghis Khan, should have no place in today's corporate culture. Phillips (Lincoln on Leadership, Warner, 1992) uses such Revolutionary War figures as Washington, Jefferson, Paine, Franklin, and John Adams to illuminate concepts of management. Unlike Dunnigan and Masterson, he organizes his chapters by theme, e.g., "Inspire the Masses," "Build Strong Alliances"?using these historical figures and their words where appropriate to illustrate a point. Phillips also provides a bibliography for further reading. While Dunnigan and Masterson's work is not recommended, academic and large public libraries should consider Phillips.?Michael R. Product Review
The first thing you should know about Fielding's The World's Most Dangerous Places is that it is not a comforting book. Its pages bristle with tales of land mines, war zones, terrorists, mercenaries, mafiosi, massacres, kidnappers, drug smugglers, and all the other unpleasant travel disasters that are the stuff of nightmares. But then, as the editors point out in their foreword, "as travelers are kidnapped and executed in Cambodia, a recognized dangerous place, they also are hunted down and murdered in Los Angeles." In other words, the most dangerous thing in the world is ignorance. The second thing you should know about The World's Most Dangerous Places is that it is not meant to be used as a guidebook. True, there will be some adrenaline junkies out there who, upon perusing the pages about the war in Chechnya, decide that that's the place they want to be. The most likely audience for this book, however, is comprised of people who either have to visit the perilous corners of the world--journalists, foreign-service employees, etc.--or have a desire to learn more about such places without necessarily visiting them. It's also a good compliment to more mainstream guidebooks for the growing legion of adventure travelers whose quests for higher mountains to climb, fiercer rivers to raft, and wilder trails to hike often take them to hazardous regions. Whether you're planning a trip to a dangerous place or just want to learn more about one, The World's Most Dangerous Places is the right book at the right time.
