Book Description
The image of the Earth on the front cover was acquired from the GOES-8 Imager by the Laboratory for Atmosphere at NASA'S Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. It was taken on September 2, 1994, using two channels for the Imager to produce a "natural color" effect. The photos shown here on the back cover illustrate the four spheres of the Earth system - the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere - together with changes being produced by human activities.

From Library Journal
Schroeder (Genesis and the Big Bang, LJ 9/15/90) is an Israeli physicist and scholar of Genesis who maintains that a properly understood bible and a properly understood science provide consistent sets of data. In recent decades, scientific discoveries in cosmology, paleontology, and quantum physics do not demonstrate or prove the activity of God, but they do remove conflict with that activity. Rapprochement occurs when believers read the bible on the Bible's terms, avoiding literalism, and when scientists realize that science is powerless to pronounce on a purpose for life. Schroeder is very lucid in explaining difficult scientific concepts, such as the passage of time according to the theory of relativity, and religious data, such as the original Hebrew words. Schroeder's careful and responsible handling of the data on origins from science and Genesis 1, combined with a fresh, judicious correlation between the two, is compelling. Highly recommended.?Eugene O. Bowser, Univ. of Northern Colorado, Greeley

From Library Journal
This how-to book is divided into four parts: "Storytelling," "Ideas and Foundations," and two sections on mechanics, markets, and dealing with editors. Issac Asimov wades in rather superficially on "Plotting," "Dialog," and "Revisions," but Poul Anderson's almost technical essay on preparing a scientifically valid world couldn't be better, and Hal Clement's piece on peopling such a world is just as good. Norman Spinrad uses the techniques of futurists to model how space colonization could occur and provides graphs for the beginner. The tilt here is toward "hard" science fiction, but Jane Yolen's meditation on fantasy, "Turtles All the Way Down," is lyrical and even moving in its reverence for the past. Connie Willis writes about comedy and Stanley Schmidt, amusingly, about cliches. The market listings are exhaustive, including little magazines you won't find elsewhere. Valuable both for the beginner and the pro.

From Publishers Weekly
In the largest sense, this book is about making colossal connections. Lewis, a professor of mechanical engineering, has undertaken the ambitious feat of showing how science and engineering synergized over time to produce today’s technologically advanced world. He supports this premise by surveying such wide-ranging topics as medieval cathedral construction, Leonardo’s notebooks and the building of a Boeing 777. Throughout, he makes astute connections between the past and the present, noting, for example, that the medieval cathedral builders’ "habits of mind and processes of design formed the foundation that would later coalesce through the advances of the Renaissance, Scientific Revolution, and industrial Revolution to create the engineering of today." Line drawings and diagrams illustrate this connection. The book can be long winded and the prose awkward, particularly when Lewis moves away from the scientific realm and tries his hand at travel writing. Many chapters start with a heavy-handed statement, such as "The towering tones of the brass rising above the orchestra and organ in the great fugue that is the finale of the Saint-Saens third symphony always transplant my thoughts to the first trip that my wife and I made to France many years ago, and to where we first experienced the grandeur of medieval engineering." This turgid writing detracts from an otherwise informative look at science and engineering through the ages.
