From Library Journal
This completely revised edition of a 1994 title offers up-to-date information about the human body's own "host defense mechanisms" in the war on cancer, providing a multidisciplinary approach to treatment based on scientific studies and clinical experience. Quillin, a medical professional who has published extensively, has conducted nutrition studies with hundreds of patients in formal clinical settings. He discusses conventional therapies (chemotherapy, surgery), alternative therapies (macrobiotics, herbal and vitamin therapies), and related factors (psychosocial health, drugs, tobacco, immune dysfunctions). Appendixes list treatment referral agencies, mail-order nutrition products, suggested readings, nutritionally oriented doctors in the United States and Canada, and recipes using foods known to slow tumor growth. Written in an easy-to-read style, this work is informative, but some sections seem misplaced or redundant, and charts and graphs occasionally lack an identified source and are difficult to read. Still, this useful guide to authoritative alternatives in cancer treatment would be appreciated in public library or consumer health collections. --Virginia Lingle, Hershey medical Ctr. Product Review
"In this newly revised and long-awaited third edition of the Clinical textbook of Addictive Disorders, the carefully selected experts within their respective domains have put together an astonishingly comprehensive reference work, well-edited and accessible. Among the highlights: the foundational section boasts a valuable chapter on the latest neuroscience findings, and the evidence-based treatment modalities are given expanded coverage. And I am sure the clinician will welcome the new chapters on the myriad of special addiction populations, dealing with such topics as polysubstance disorders; psychiatric co-morbidity; gambling and other 'behavioral' addictions; pain; drug abuse among adolescents and in the workplace; HIV/AIDS;--and much, much more. This work has truly become a classic in the field!"--Leo Goldberger, Behavioral Science Book Service® Advisory Board Member

"Clinical textbook of Addictive Disorders, Third Edition, nicely depicts the many recent advances that have taken place in the addictions field. The latest neuroscientific knowledge--including neurobiological mechanisms, pathophysiology, and genetics--is well presented, as are current evidence-based intervention methods. The authors assembled here represent the top experts in their respective areas. This new edition is an ideal tool for all mental health practitioners and trainees involved in diagnosing and treating persons with addictive disorders, as well as for researchers and educators."--Pedro Ruiz, MD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Texas medical School at Houston

"This is more than just an update of the classic reference. In this edition, addictive disorders have been placed in a context reflecting their expression in the real world. Thus, polydrug use, psychiatric comorbidity, and 'behavioral addictions,' such as pathological gambling, are now emphasized. Moreover, issues related to addiction across populations (e.g., ethnic groups, gender, and children/adolescents) are now addressed. The result is a volume that will be useful for professionals in social services, health care, and public policy, as well as advanced students training for these professions."--Thomas H. Brandon, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of South Florida, and Tobacco research and Intervention Program, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and research Institute

"I have been looking forward to the new edition of this useful teaching tool. Beyond covering the basics that readers expect from an addiction text--pharmacology of specific substances and major treatment modalities--the editors also address a breadth of other topics, including polydrug use, comorbidities, HIV/AIDS, and the needs of women and older adults. The comprehensiveness and readability of this text promise to make it a favorite among clinical educators, medical students, and residents."--Joyce A. Tinsley, MD, Department of Psychiatry, University of Connecticut; Executive Director, American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training

"An essential clinical resource, this revised and updated volume features comprehensive yet focused coverage of the most important and innovative topics in the ever-changing field of substance abuse treatment. Written by noted practitioners and researchers, chapters range from the pharmacology of psychoactive drugs to the latest psychosocial interventions and medications shown to be effective in treating patients with alcohol and drug problems. This is an ideal text for providing students with a broad overview of the field as well as specific guidelines for clinical practice. Practitioners will find it a handy reference for state-of the-art conceptualizations and treatments for the full range of substance use disorders."--Arnold M. Washton, PhD, private practice, New York, New York, and Princeton, New Jersey

"This is an important, accessible, comprehensive book; I commend the authors and editors for their work. This is a useful text for teaching about the addictive disorders in many fields, including medicine, psychology, social work, counseling, and nursing.Stands out as a readable and authoritative text. This text deserves to be read by mental and behavioral health care professionals before it takes its useful and deserved place on their reference bookshelves."--APA PsycCRITIQUES

"This is a comprehensive update of this excellent textbook of addiction psychiatry. All psychiatrists need to be knowledgeable in this area and reading this book would be a step in that direction."--Doody's Electronic Journal

Live Right 4 Your Type Live Right 4 Your Type

Product Review
The idea that blood type plays a role in health, wellness, and personality wasn't exactly new when Dr. Peter D'Adamo came out with Eat Right 4 Your Type in 1997. The idea had been around for most of the 19th century, and had gained quite a bit of currency in Japan. But it was a startling idea to most Americans, who made the book a bestseller that was translated into more than 40 languages and spawned a similarly successful sequel, Cook Right 4 Your Type.

Now, Dr. D'Adamo--armed with new studies on genetic links between blood types, disease, and behavior--looks at the psychological and medical peculiarities that seem to predominate in one blood type or another. Type O's, for example, have lower than average amounts of a brain chemical called dopamine, leading to poor concentration, hyperactivity, and temper tantrums. A's tend to manufacture too much cortisol, a stress hormone that can lead to hypertension and has even been implicated in Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Type B's and AB's clear nitric oxide out of their systems faster, allowing them to calm down more rapidly than other blood types when stressed.

Dr. D'Adamo offers detailed lifestyle modifications for each type, including exercise programs, long lists of food to either seek out or avoid, and suggested treatment of specific illnesses. Some of this gets pretty arcane, including his recommendation of bladder wrack (a seaweed) for ulcer treatment of Type O's.

A big part of the appeal of this book series is that anyone reading it can become a participant by joining Dr. D'Adamo's blood-type registry at www.dadamo.com. Live Right for Your Type is peppered with testimonials from these registrants, giving the reader a sense that a true transformation in health, appearance, weight, and well-being is just a few diet and lifestyle changes away. --Lou Schuler

From Publishers Weekly
Author of the bestselling Eat Right 4 Your Type, D'Adamo delves more deeply into the influence of blood type in this follow-up volume, claiming not only that it determines the way individuals should eat, but also the way they should live. For each blood type he offers an extensive "prescription" for lifestyle changes, covering such issues as exercise, stress relief and sleep patterns, as well as supplements and foods. Type O, for instance, is advised to eat red meat and engage in aerobic exercise, while Type A is advised to focus on vegetables and try yoga. D'Adamo identifies the medical risk factors for each blood type, pointing out that, for example, As and ABs are at greater risk for developing cancer, while Os may be more vulnerable to mood disorders or destructive behaviors. In addition to his "prescriptions for living," D'Adamo offers a soup-to-nut diet plan for each blood type, complete with explanations of why various foods work for or against the body. While D'Adamo's plan is meticulously researched, readers may balk at the complexity not only of his text but also of the diet itself, which may create kitchen clashes when individuals of several blood types share meals. This comprehensive, fascinating theory will suit the nutrition-committed, but readers seeking a quick fix to weight and health problems may be left in a daze. (Jan.)

Protein Power: The High-Protein Low Carbohydrate Way to Lose Weight, Feel Fit, and Boost Your Health-in Just Weeks! Protein Power: The High-Protein Low Carbohydrate Way to Lose Weight, Feel Fit, and Boost Your Health-in Just Weeks!

Product Review
If smoked salmon and cream cheese omelets, sautéed jumbo shrimp, and double-patty burgers suit your palate, belly up to the Protein Power diet: "Not a high protein diet" but "an adequate protein diet." Doctors Michael R. and Mary Dan Eades make a persuasive case in favor of "the diet we were meant to eat."

Similar to Dr. Robert Atkins's New Diet Revolution, the authors cite insulin as the main culprit in weight gain and expound the benefits of a diet extremely low in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates, which are changed into sugar during digestion, stimulate the body to store fat, making weight loss virtually impossible. The most revolutionary idea put forth in Protein Power is that the fat you eat has very little bearing on the fat you gain: in other words, we aren't what we eat after all. Researchers have found that eating larger portions of protein in conjunction with severely reduced portions of carbohydrates causes people to burn the excess fat stored in their bodies.

Protein Power is packed with helpful charts and formulas, so you can estimate your body-fat percentage and your ideal weight for your particular body composition. There are worksheets to calculate your protein need and carbohydrate and protein equivalency charts, as well as charts that allow you to track your fat and weight loss. But this book is not all grams and percentages: it also shows you what a day of eating on this diet would look like and includes sample menus and 70 pages of recipes. If you've been starving yourself for years and just can't seem to lose weight, this may be the diet for you. --Jhana Bach

From Publishers Weekly
The Eades, who share a weight-loss and family-medicine practice in Arkansas, have each written a popular medical book?his is Thin So Fast; hers, The Doctor's Complete Guide to vitamins and Minerals. In their first shared volume, they turn popular weight-management beliefs?and the latest FDA food-guide pyramid?upside down. For years, overweight Americans have been counseled to turn away from meat and fat and embrace a high-carbohydrate diet. Joining a growing band of researchers that includes Barry Sears (The Zone), the Eades discuss the biochemical roles of hormones in the metabolic process to demonstrate why low-fat, high-carb programs don't always result in weight loss and present a convincing case for their high-protein, low-carb alternative. The key is preventing, through diet, overproduction of insulin, which itself "controls the storage of fat" and is triggered by the ingestion of carbohydrates. Their eating plan?which is bolstered by lists of protein and carbohydrate counts for common foods, a collection of about 75 appealing recipes and discussion of the necessity of exercise?will lead, they aver, to the body's more efficent burning of fat, leading in turn to reduction in one's percentage of body fat. Cholesterol, vitamins, minerals and various risk factors are also discussed. Chapters end with fairly complete summaries that will be appreciated by readers who are not willing or able to work through the fairly extensive scientific data cited by the Eades in this iconoclastic program.
