From Publishers Weekly
Sociology professor Loewen lambastes history textbooks as both too inaccurate and too bland to engage students.
Copyright 1996 Reed business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
When textbook gaffes make news, as with the tome that explained that the Korean War ended when Truman dropped the atom bomb, the expeditious remedy would be to fire the editor. Loewen would rather hire a new team of authors bent on the pursuit of context instead of factoids. In Loewen's ideal text, events and people illuminating the multicultural holy trinity of race, gender, and social class would predominate over the fixation on heroes and acts of government. Such is the mood adopted throughout this critique of 12 American history texts in current use. Vetting 10 topics they commonly address--from the Pilgrims to the Vietnam War--Loewen bewails a long train of alleged omissions and distortions. To account for the deplorable situation, he offers this quasi-Marxist explanation: "Perhaps we are all dupes, manipulated by elite white male capitalists who orchestrate how history is written as part of their scheme to perpetuate their own power and privilege at the expense of the rest of us." Certainly students' appalling ignorance of history is troublesome, and broken families and excessive TV viewing are at least the equals of white male conspirators as the cause. However, libraries located where dissatisfaction with textbooks exists should be interested in Loewen's critique. Gilbert Taylor --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Review
Fred M. Donner, University of Chicago : This book is an extremely judicious `stock-taking' of scholarship in the field of medieval Islamic history, especially valuable for the way it examines--and forces us to reconsider--the assumptions on which previous scholarship has been based. Students of Islamic studies will find it indispensable.

Book Description

This book will be immensely helpful to those who wish to orient themselves to what has become a very large body of literature on medieval Islamic history. Combining a bibliographic study with an inquiry into method, it opens with a survey of the principal reference tools available to historians of Islam and a systematic Review of the sources they will confront. Problems of method are then examined in a series of chapters, each exploring a broad topic in the social and political history of the Middle East and North Africa between A.D. 600 and 1500. The topics selected represent a cross-section of Islamic historical studies, and range from the struggles for power within the early Islamic community to the life of the peasantry. Each chapter pursues four questions. What concrete research problems are likely to be most challenging and productive? What resources do we possess for dealing with these problems? What strategies can we devise to exploit our resources most effectively? What is the current state of the scholarly literature for the topic under study?

Product Review
developing a more ecological approach to food production is urgentthis text is an exciting introduction to achieving this goal
- Dr. Eugene Odum, Director Emeritus, Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia
The book could provide a very useful reference for the serious farmer as well as students of the relatively new field.
--Ecology Action Newsletter, February 2001

Book Description
Agroecology: Ecological Processes in Sustainable Agriculture provides the theoretical and conceptual framework for the study and analysis of agroecosystems. The author builds upon the understanding of the complex factors of the environment as they affect agricultural crops and animals and examines concepts at a systems level, focusing on interactions and interrelationships on the population, community, and ecosystem levels. Informative case studies demonstrate how ecology can be applied to agriculture and each chapter concludes with questions to ensure a complete understanding of the information.
