Book Description
From Chamonix and St. Moritz in the European Alps to Aspen, Colorado, and Lake Louise, Canada, this beautifully illustrated volume features 40 of the most celebrated, fashionable, and diverse skiing destinations in the world. Each resort is treated individually, with the author's vivid and lively description, handsome color photos, and an information panel that tells readers how to get there, the site's altitude, number of lifts, types of pistes or ski runs, the resort's special advantages, and its drawbacks. Each description also features a small map showing nearby cities and approaches by highway. The resorts and sites described encompass the globe, and are categorized by home country. Described in France are Val d'Isère et Tignes, Courchevel et les Trois Vallées, la Grave et les Deux Alpes, and others. Included among Austrian resorts are St. Anton-am-Arlberg, Kitzbhel, and Ischgl. For Switzerland, the book covers Zermatt, Berbier, St. Moritz, and others, and for Germany, Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Still other resorts include Italy's Cortina d'Ampezzo and Selva e Val Gardena, Scandinavia's Åre and Riksgränsen and Narvik, Canada's Whistler and Blackcomb, Lake Louise and Banff, and Fernieand for the U.S., Aspen, Jackson Hole, Lake Tahoe, Vail, Telluride, and others. Literally the whole world is covered, including resorts in Japan, New Zealand, and Australia. Described for the extra-adventurous advanced skier are several remote "helidrop" areas that are not resorts, but which feature wonderful slopes. Among them are Manali in the Himalayas and Valdez in Alaska. Hundreds of beautiful full-color photos help make this handsome book a reliable ski vacationer's guide and an armchair traveler's dream book.

Book Description
The Essential Guide to skiing is no rehash of the standard "how to ski" books, simply updated with newer pictures of newer equipment and clothing. Nor is it "Skiing for Dummies." Instead, it is a comprehensive book packed with authoritative advice on every aspect of the sport. For novices, there is information on how to walk in ski boots, when and where to rent equipment, and where to attach a lift ticket. Experienced skiers can learn how to find the shortest lift lines to the best slopes, discover the best goggle lens colors for flat light, and uncover the best powder stashes even when the mountain looks skied out. Other subjects range from the financial (finding the cheapest lift tickets) to the mundane (evaluating the fiber content of a pair of ski socks) to the creative (how to take great action pictures and videos). Extensive black-and-white photographs add to the fun.

Book Description
Guided by a strange epiphany, Richard Phipps traveled to Japan with $600 and a pair of skis. The result, skiing Zen, is much more than a ski adventure. It is a tapestry of thought about sports and awareness, about differences between Eastern and Western thinking, and about individualism amidst group pressure. Woven into the travel anecdotes, cultural insights, and skiing action are intriguing concepts such as the spectrum of attention and distraction, the evolving spiral of learning, the power of guided imagery, and the correlation between Zen and love. Stunning in scope and yet penetrating in its earnest insight, Phipps is indeed Searching for the Spirituality of Sport.

From Library Journal
Aspiring and proficient water skiers will find a wealth of practical how-to information in this work by Duvall, a five-time World Professional Slalom Champion. With concise, readable instructions she handily takes the absolute novice through the nuts-and-bolts of water skiing basics, as well as giving the more experienced practitioner tips for improvement and fine-tuning. Nothing is left to chance, with chapters on "Essential Equipment," "Boats and Drivers," and even "Installing Your Own Slalom Course." Naturally, water skiing cannot be learned from a book, no matter how well written. However, Duvall provides an accessible work on what is in store and, for those who've already started, how to make it easier and more enjoyable. A handy glossary defines and references common water skiing terms and acronyms. A good purchase for resort area public libraries. Illustrations not seen. - David M.
