The Brambles The Brambles

From Publishers Weekly
Minot's graceful, candid novel about the meaning of adulthood and the depth of family attachment follows the three siblings of the titular clan as they face the consequences of their life choices. Margaret is an ambivalent mother of three who relinquished her autonomy and former identity as a hip New Yorker for a suburban life of carpools; Max, a new father, quit his job as an independent film producer but hides the truth from his wife by pretending to go to work every day; depressed, lonely 20-something Edie struggles with singlehood and a newly acquired eating disorder. Now, they must cope with their widowed father, Arthur, who moves into Margaret's home to suffer through the final stages of cancer. There is also the matter of a long-held family secret, revealed, of course, when they least expect it. Minot (Susan's sister and author of The Tiny One) has a refreshing, contemporary voice, and even the most mundane moments—Edie talking to herself in the car, Margaret's daughter dancing on the lawn—contain surprising swells of emotion. As it turns out, the revealed secret is melodramatic and far-fetched, but this novel excels all the same, buoyed up by its quiet conflicts and small, gorgeous glimpses at truth.

Product Review
“A moving portrait of the ties that bind.”
Kirkus Reviews

“An impressive stylistic leap from her admired first novel. . . . Minot shows that she is not afraid to take risks to tease out from the beautiful bones of her story its marrow of suspense.”
Elle

“If Katherine Mansfield had lived to give birth and bury her parents, she would have written The Brambles. This is a luminous and lyrical book; the writing is rich, but slices like a shining blade. Eliza Minot is not afraid to tackle the big subjects: birth and death, as well as love and life. It is a triumph.”

From Publishers Weekly
When Los Angeles comedian and television writer and producer Wilder-Taylor got pregnant, she feared undergoing this process: "a perfectly sane woman who swigs Jack Daniel's, never goes to sleep before eight a.m., and has had at least one STD gives birth and suddenly becomes a different person [who] subscribes to three dozen parenting magazines, thinks a wild night is tossing back two O'Doul's, and never hits the hay after eight p.m." Of course, now that the author has a daughter, she's smitten; the child "grew on me every day, and by six months I was definitely her bitch." Hoping to be the voice of reason amid a cacophony of parenting advice (in the form of books, mothers-in-law and others), Wilder-Taylor dishes on sharing the parenting responsibilities with your husband ("I felt like saying, 'Didn't you get the memo? WE'RE PARENTS NOW! LOOK ALIVE!' "), breast feeding ("it hurts like a rhesus monkey biting your nipples"), meeting other new mothers (only they can answer questions like "How the fuck does this Diaper Genie work?") and other aspects of new parenthood. Crass but reassuring, Wilder-Taylor succeeds in putting fears at rest. (Apr.)

Book Description
The moment the second line on the pee stick turns pink, women discover they've entered a world of parenting experts.

Friends, family, colleagues, the UPS delivery guy -- suddenly everybody is a trove of advice, much of it contradictory and confusing. With dire warnings of what will happen if baby is fed on demand and even direr warnings of what will happen if he isn't, not to mention hordes of militant "lactivists," cosleeping advocates, and books on what to worry about next, modern parenthood can seem like a minefield.

In busy Mom-friendly short essays, Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay delivers the empathetic straight dirt on parenting, tackling everything from Mommy & Me classes ("Your baby doesn't need to be making friends at three months old -- you do! But not with people you'll meet at Mommy & Me") to attachment parenting ("If you're holding your baby 24/7, that's not a baby, that's a tumor"). Stefanie Wilder-Taylor combines practical tips with sidesplitting humor and refreshing honesty, assuring women that they can be good mothers and responsibly make their own choices. A witty and welcome antidote to trendy parenting texts and scarifying case studies, Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay provides genuine support, encouragement, and indispensable common-sense advice.

Book Description
Sometimes you just have to laugh.

If your hair is always perfect; if you always have an umbrella when it rains; or if you are never, ever late, this is not the book for you.

If, however, you sometimes wake up feeling fat, are late for work, are gossiped about, are screamed at by your children, and are not fully adored and nurtured by your beloved, then this is the book for you.

Life doesn’t always work out the way we plan. There are good surprises and there are bad surprises. Jenny McCarthy, the New York Times bestselling author of Baby Laughs and Belly Laughs, told you the truth about childbirth and about the first year of mommyhood. Now she’s telling the truth about learning to juggle it all: work, motherhood, romance, sex; and even what to do when a relationship just isn’t working anymore. She doesn’t have all of the answers, but she knows what it’s like to be a modern woman in a mixed-up world—and she’s not holding back.

With outrageously funny musings on faking it, what to do when your man thinks your friend is a bitch, hiding the Visa bill, and what to do when you turn into your parents, Life Laughs is the perfect book for those days when you just want to crawl back into bed, the days you want to raise a glass with friends, and anytime you just want to giggle.

THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER ON BELLY LAUGHS

"Hilarious. A no-holds-barred look at the joys, challenges, and humiliations of the first year of motherhood."

Book Description

From the author of the bestselling The Modern Girl's Guide to Life comes a must-have book for the young mom, including best-kept secrets, practical advice, and multiple solutions for problems from birth to age four

Just when you thought you could cook (hey, one meal counts), clean (if the queen was coming), and seduce a man (well, long enough to get married), life throws you a curveball that makes all of your previous ineptitudes in life pale in comparison. With the appearance of one little extra line on a pregnancy test, you're thrown into a world of covering up leaks on shirts and taking a pacifier away from a two-year-old who has the grip of a pit bull.

In this funny, smart, and honest book, Jane Buckingham cuts through the clutter to give you simple information and practical advice for navigating the different stages of motherhood. From how to get your child to sleep and how to wean, to how to get him off the pacifier and how to stop his tantrums, this book will help moms feel in the know and in control! Some of Buckingham's favorite tips:

  • If your baby has a hard time feeding because of a stuffy nose, turn on the shower to steam up the bathroom and feed her there.

  • Put your children's paints in an empty egg carton -- it's the perfect size, and there's no mess to clean up when you're done. Use an old raincoat with the arms cut off as a smock.

  • You should buy a new car seat, rather than borrowing a friend's old car seat, as there are constant safety upgrades. Also, be sure you are the person registered to that car seat (send in that registration card!) so that you'll be notified in case of a recall.

  • Keep the three-day rule in mind: Almost any bad habit can be broken in three days. Granted, they may be tough, torturous days, but you can do it!

The Modern Girl's Guide to Motherhood helps modern moms do it all with love, style, and flair!

From Publishers Weekly
In this latest edition of a classic originally published almost 40 years ago, photographer Nilsson and obstetrician Hamberger explore the miracle of birth, from attraction between a man and a woman to fertilization, pregnancy, labor and delivery; they also discuss infertility and developments in IVF and other treatments. Over 350 new photographs have been added to the fourth edition, including in utero pictures captured with endoscopy and three-dimensional ultrasound technology. Nilsson zooms in on sperm racing towards the egg, the brand-new zygote, the embryo clinging to the lining of the uterus, a tadpole-like fetus and the remarkably developed ear of a 18-week old fetus, among other moments in the process of human reproduction. With Hamberger's updated text on guidance for new parents, progress in fertility treatments, genetics and pregnancy health, the volume should continue to be a vivid reference for the whole family.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Completely revised, this book features an all new text and almost all new full-color photos. However, it is not the end-all for books dealing with childbirth. The subject of Chorionic Villus Sampling or CVS (a pregnancy test for damaged chromosomes such as Down's, etc.) is depicted here as similar to amniocentesis, inserting the needle into the abdomen to withdraw a villi from the placenta. Frequently in the U. S. the procedure is performed using a catheter inserted through the cervix. Also, the book does not discuss the increased risk of CVS over amniocentesis. However, the breathtaking photos and comprehensive text make it a must for all libraries.
