15 of 15 people found the following review helpful: A very valuable study tool for the AP examination., February 23, 2004 Reviewer:Monika "equestrienne_23" (Washington State, USA) - This is a very valuable study tool to use in preparation for the AP European History examination, but it needs to be used correctly to be effective! Reading through some of the previous reviews, I fear that the problems some students have noted may not be the fault of the book, but rather of their own study habits. Trying to read the entire book a week or two before the test will NOT work. The material is extremely concentrated and covers more than 400 years of history. Trying to absorb it all in a couple of weeks will do nothing more than mix you up hopelessly and almost guarantee a poor score. Pacing yourself is the KEY to success here. Buy the book as close to the beginning of the school year as you can, and follow along throughout the year. Highlight and take notes where needed. Then, as the test date approaches (i.e. 1-2 months ahead of time), start a more rigorous program. Re-read the material you've already gone over. Then take the practice tests. Over and over and over. Until you can consistently answer almost all of the questions on all of the practice tests correctly. It may seem like overkill, but it's worth it. After each time you take a practice test, check your answers, AND read the detailed explanations given for the answers that you got wrong. These explanations are invaluable. Of further use are the sample DBQ and essay questions given in the book. It's up to you how far you want to go with these. I found that actually writing out an entire essay wasn't necessary. But I would suggest at least compiling an outline for each question, to ensure that you have enough information to provide a good answer. If you find yourself only able to put together a skimpy outline, then read up on the subject and try again. True, only a very small portion of the material covered in the book will actually show up on the test, but you have no way of knowing WHAT portion. This book compiles sample questions from numerous past examinations. There is a LOT of information here. But as my teacher pointed out (and I'm inclined to agree), it's rather like training for a marathon with weights on your legs. You'll get really good at running with weights, and then when you take them off for the actual race, it will seem super easy! I found that to be very true when I took the test after studying with this book. Another handy feature of this edition is that it comes with software that can be used with either Windows or Macintosh. This way you can take the same practice tests on your computer, if you prefer that to studying by hand. It's also easier to check your answers this way, rather than flipping back and forth through the book. AND the software times your tests for you, so you can make sure you're able to cover all the material within the time slot you'll be allowed on the actual test. Overall, this is a great study tool, and should help you immensely if you take it seriously. Good luck!

Our authors are as diverse as the fields represented in the books we publish. They are well-known in their respective disciplines and serve on the faculties of prestigious high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States and Canada.

    ABOUT OUR BOOK
This book provides an accurate and complete representation of the Advanced Placement Examination in European History. The six practice tests and the Review section are based on the most recently administered AP European history Exams. Each test includes every type of question that can be expected to appear on the actual exam. Following each practice exam is an answer key complete with detailed explanations. The explanations discuss both the correct and incorrect responses and are designed to clarify the material for the student.

By studying the Review sections, completing all six tests, and studying the answer explanations, students can discover their strengths and weaknesses and prepare themselves for the actual AP European history Examination.

Teachers of Advanced Placement European history and Social Studies courses will also find this book of great use. The book can be used as a supplemental text in planning courses and practicing for the exam. It will provide teachers with specific information concerning the level, scope, and type of material found on the actual exam.

    ABOUT THE TEST
The Advanced Placement program is designed to allow high school students to pursue college-level studies while attending high school. The three-hour exam is usually admiinistered to high school students who have completed a year's study in a college-level European history course. The results are then used for determining course credit and/or placement level in college.

The Advanced Placement European history course is designed to represent college-level history studies. Students are expected to leave the course with college-level writing skills, knowledge of historical events and concepts, and an ability to interpret historical documents. The course is intended for students with a strong background in history and writing.

The exam is divided into two sections:
    1. Multiple-choice: This section consists of 80 multiple-choice questions designed to measure the student's ability to understand and analyze European history from the Renaissance to the recent past. This section tests factual knowledge, scope of preparation, and knowledge-based analytical skills. The student has 55 minutes to complete this section of the exam, which counts for fifty percent of the final grade.
    2. Free-response: This section is composed of three essay questions designed to measure the student's ability to write coherent, intelligent, well-organized essays on historical topics. The essays require the student to demonstrate mastery of historical interpretation and the ability to express views and knowledge in writing. They may relate documents to different areas, analyze common themes of different time periods, or compare individual and group experiences which reflect socio-economic, racial, gender, and ethnic differences. Part A consists of a mandatory 15-minute reading period, followed by 45 minutes in which the student must answer a document-based question (DBQ). In Part B the student is given two groups of three essay questions and must answer one from each group. The student has 70 minutes total to write both of the essays. In determining the score for the free-response section, the DBQ is weighted 45 percent while the two thematic essays are weighted 55 percent. The entire free-response section counts for one-half of the final grade.

These topics are broken down as follows:
    Political and Diplomatic history 30-40%
    Social and Economic history 30-40%
    Intellectual and Cultural history 20-30%

The exam basically encompasses the high Renaissance to the present. The time periods are covered as follows: 50% from 1450 to 1789, 50% from 1789 to present. Major late medieval events bearing upon pre-1450 events may also be included.
