From Publishers Weekly
Dietician Rondinelli and chef Bucko make cooking five healthy dinners a weekfor an entire yearlook like a no-brainer in this simple cookbook. They divide their book by month, and within each month, they give four weeks worth of main courses (presumably for dinner, though they could certainly make nice lunches). A grocery list begins each week, followed by the recipes, which generally fall under the "continental" umbrella, with Mediterranean, Latin, Asian and other influences. Although no dish requires more than four steps, and prep times range from 5 to 20 minutes per recipe, there are plenty of intriguing dinner options, such as Three-Pepper Pasta Salad with Goat Cheese, or Chicken with Portabello Tofu Sauce. Rondinelli and Bucko also feature one dessert for each month, which are the books weakest link, as they often take the easy way out: Cherry Tarts, for example, require canned "light" cherry pie topping. Sidebars give further information on ingredients and advice for alternate preparation methods, and every recipe includes the dishs nutritional information. From Publishers Weekly
Diagnosed with diabetes, LaBelle, bestselling cookbook writer (LaBelle Cuisine) and Grammy-winning singer, has had to find ways to control her diet and make it healthier; this newest is the inspiring result. All 100 starters, entrees, sides and desserts are low on fat, sodium and sugar-but definitely high on flavor. Orange Roughy with Roasted Tomato and Olive Relish and Marvelous Minted Snap Peas are stylishly lean and contemporary, but LaBelle also cooks up old-fashioned Southern comfort food like Crunchy Cajun Catfish Nuggets, Down-Home Pork Chops in Guilt-Free Gravy and Chocolate Pecan Pie. All dishes include complete nutritional analyses, with diabetic exchanges and carbohydrate choices developed and approved by the American Diabetes Association and the American Dietetic Association; they also come with "Patti's Pointers" (ideas on technique, equipment and ingredients), along with warm reminiscences of meals with family and friends. LaBelle is wonderful company for someone on a diet regime of any kind (as her friendly family photos further illustrate); she is creative, upbeat, knowledgeable and amusing. From Booklist
What sets off Patti LaBelle's Lite Cuisine from other celebrity cookbooks is its careful attention to recipes suitable for anyone living with diabetes. Working with coauthor Laura Randolph Lancaster, LaBelle has turned her own struggles with diabetes into a book full of help and inspirational advice for anyone burdened with the same affliction. To accomplish this, the book records dozens of recipes with reduced fats and sugars. Chicken is skinless and ground turkey stands in for ground beef as appropriate. Sugar substitutes make sweet desserts possible. Every recipe has a full nutritional analysis as well as a listing of diet exchanges for diabetics. Book Description
At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families Betty Crocker, America's most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)--one of the leading medical centers--to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them. Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices--the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book's 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there's no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories. Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses--invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust.

From Library Journal
This is the first entry in the publisher's "First Year" series, which seeks to set itself apart from other health advice lines with its authors all "patient-experts." Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 1996, Becker quickly learned that there are many ways to approach diabetes care. She uses appropriate humor and presents basic information to take the reader through each day of the first week, each subsequent week of the first month, and the next 11 months after diagnosis. Emphasizing the self-management skills that all diabetics must master for adequate control of the disease, Becker addresses the questions not always anticipated or answered by healthcare providers. For instance, she covers necessary and optional tests, diet, drugs, weight and stress management, and the emotional strain of the disorder. Her sections on insurance and paying medical bills are excellent. Internet diabetes expert Rick Mendoza has also contributed a chapter on online resources. Other useful features include a glossary, reading list, and further resources. This excellent volume should inspire patients to manage prudently their disease. Recommended for consumer health collections. Janet M. Schneider, James A. Haley Veterans' Hosp., Tampa, FL Copyright 2001 Reed business Information, Inc.

Midwest Book Review
This newly revised, updated fourth edition of a classic packs in over 200 recipes low in salt, sugar and fat, following the latest guidelines of the American Diabetes Association and including plenty of information on nutrition. This is not sugar-free cooking: many dessert dishes call for real sugar rather than substitutes. But it does outline the basic principles of diabetic exchange cooking.
