Book Description
Young Countess Meliara swears to her dying father that she and her brother will defend their people from the growing greed of the king. That promise leads them into a war for which they are ill-prepared, which threatens the very people they are trying to protect. But war is simple compared to what follows, in peacetime. Meliara is summoned to live at the royal palace, where friends and enemies look alike, and intrigue fills the dance halls and the drawing rooms. If she is to survive, Meliara must learn a whole new way of fighting-with wits and words and secret alliances.

In war, at least, she knew in whom she could trust. Now she can trust no one.

The Firebird edition of Crown Duel combines the hardcover editions of Crown Duel and Court Duel-and features a never-before-published story by Sherwood Smith!

"A fantasy world fit for the most discriminating medieval partisan." (Publishers Weekly)

Crown Duel Sequels
12:52 PM PST, March 5, 2006
Most of the mail I get asks about sequels to Crown Duel.  On my webpage I explain that this is just one of many, many stories set in this world.  (I wrote the first draft of this story in 1972.)  The characters in this story appear in some of these other stories.  I am seeking a publisher for them--in the meantime, there is a 'sekrit' place where I upload some of them, on LiveJournal in the Athanarel community.  You do have to join the community to see them--but starting a LiveJournal is free.  Do come!  People there have designed icons, artwork, and discuss their favorite writers and books.

New Readings

It's already the beginnng of March.  I recently got away for a wonderful three day science fiction and fantasy convention in Richardson, Texas, called ConDFW.  It was great hanging out with other writers and talking craft, inspiration, the trials and triumphs of being a writer.  It was equally great to be talking about books with other readers.  How else can we learn?

Recent reads I enjoyed:  Ann Halam's Siberia. As Gwyneth Jones she writes dense, fascinating sf; not all writers for adults can write successfully for young adults.  Halam succeeds with clear, vivid prose, a protagonist who is a convincing teen, and a situation fraught with tension when she is sent to a hellish school just for being too smart.

Anthony Trollope's Ayala's Angel.
Another nineteenth century book I enjoy.  I love omniscient narrators, the casual pacing of the best 19th century novels.  One can relax with them, relate to the emotions of people of nearly 200 years ago--and be taken by surprised by the differing details of everyday life.  The characters are complex, the emotions true, and the ending of this one happy.

John Wright's
Fugitives of Chaos. This author has managed what I thought impossible--to blend science fiction and fantasy in not only a believable way, but an intriguing way, full of fun and panache.  I'd thought this particular sort of story died with Zelazny.  Do try this novel about a group of teens (are they?) with astonishing powers, kept prisoner in a 'boarding school' just for them.  They must escape, but the keepers also have astonishing powers [edited to add: there will be a sequel, the story is not over.)

Product Review
Japanese food was virtually unknown in many Western cities in the 1980s, when Shizuo Tsujii wrote Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art. M.F.K. Fisher's introduction eloquently sets the stage for Tsujii's classic work. It may be the most thought-provoking piece ever written about Japanese food for non-Asians, pointing out how food and even the physical act of eating differ from what they are in Japan. Tsujii's writing is clear and educational. He talks specifically to a Western, non-Asian audience, demonstrating far more awareness of our culinary preferences and prejudices than most Westerners have for his. Following the preface (which should not be skipped), an arrangement of color photos of key ingredients and dishes sets the scene. Next, part 1 provides a thorough explanation of techniques for Japanese cooking and instructions for making all the basic elements of dishes. These "lessons" cover cutting vegetables, steaming, grilling, and deep frying the Japanese way, and even how to make sushi. Recipes cover Basic Vinegar Salad Dressings, Sushi Rice, and Teriyaki. To prepare Vinegared Octopus, a complete series of drawings clearly demonstrates each step.

Part 2 consists solely of recipes. Gather together fresh ginger, soy sauce, the sweet wine mirin , sake, and rice vinegar and you can make many of them. Beginners might start with Deep Fried Chicken Patties, Steak Teriyaki, Tortoise Shell Tofu, simply bathed in a tasty sauce, and Asparagus Rice, a light and colorful dish. Because of its combination of background information, comprehensive recipes, and excellent instructions, Japanese Cooking: A Simple art will always remain an important book for learning about this simple yet complex cuisine. --Dana Jacobi --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description
Over 1,900 companies with over 8,000 marks, logos, and symbols divided equally among the old folk potters, studio potters, dinnerware manufacturers, distributors, and decoratorsfill this massive hardbound encyclopedia. No values. Review: This thick hardcover book is packed with text and illustrations, the sheer measure of which admittedly took the author nearly a quarter century to research and compile. The book is an indispensable aid for properly identifying pottery, porcelain, and clay pieces. The various manufacturer listings contain paragraphs outlining the history of each company as well as interesting "insider" information. Both the novice and veteran collector can ID their merchandise quickly and easily.

From Publishers Weekly
According to the authors, 80% of American households own a slow cooker. This whopping collection of 350 recipes is reason enough to unearth that Crock-Pot from the attic or invest in one of the new high-tech models. The title, however, is a misnomer, and not just because the book includes a recipe for "Mom's Beef Stew." Much of what Hensperger (The Bread Bible) and Kaufmann (coauthor, with Hensperger, of The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook) present is exactly the kind of comfort food typically associated with childhood snow days or family gatherings. To use the word "hearty" in describing these recipes is to state the obvious. There are more than a dozen oatmeals and porridges, ranging from Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal to Creamy Cornmeal Porridge. Soups include Vegetarian Split Pea, French Onion, and White Bean with Bacon. Twenty-four types of baked beans are mere prelude for the 14 chili options, including "Senator Barry Goldwater's Arizona Chili" (which gives new meaning to the phrase "bowl of red"). Other recipes are for poultry, meat and fish dishes, and New and Old World dishes are plentiful. The only letdown is the "Not-from-the-Slow Cooker Accompaniments" chapter, with its uninspired choices like Baked Rice, and Mixed Green Salad. But the concluding pages, full of puddings and fruit desserts, atone with sinful treats like Chocolate Peanut Butter Pudding Cake and Rum-Butterscotch Bananas. (Jan.)
